Classified Appreciation Week

Brothers and Sisters,

On behalf of the AFT Washington Executive Board and staff, I want to thank you for your dedication and for the contribution you make to your workplace and your union.

Governor Jay Inslee has proclaimed March 11 – 15 “Classified School Employee Week” in Washington State, acknowledging that classified employees “are instrumental in fulfilling the state’s paramount duty to educate all students.”  Indeed, because of you, students arrive safely to and from school, receive healthy meals, have a clean and safe environment, have the information they need to enroll, and are provided a good learning environment. Classified employees also assist in the classroom, get school supplies to those who need them, and much, much more.

As a union, we are honored to represent over 1,100 classified members at eight K-12 and higher education locals. Our AFT Washington governance structure includes the Classified Council which provides a venue for bringing issues and priorities to the Executive Board. They meet monthly throughout the school year, and I encourage you to participate in having your voice heard through this Council and as a member of your local.

Please share the attached gubernatorial proclamation with your members and administration. We will also highlight Classified School Employee Week on our website at

I look forward to seeing many of you at our conference on March 16th.

Again, thank you for all that you do!

In Solidarity,

Sandra Schroeder, President
