Oppose Anti-Muslim, Anti-refugee and Anti-immigrant Rhetoric

AFT Seattle Local 1789, AFL-CIO, wishes to state publicly:

The November 2015 repulsive and horrific terrorist attacks in Lebanon, France, and most recently, Mali, have been followed by a rise of anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim bigotry in the U.S. and world media.  These public statements create another form of terror as they contribute to an atmosphere of oppression and fear. As faculty, staff, and students of the Seattle College district, we recognize that one of our strengths as a community is our diversity and our commitment to an encouraging and educational work environment.  We are proud of the fact that as faculty, staff, and students, we include immigrants, refugees, Muslims and people of color.  We are all attacked by statements that confound Islam with terrorism or see all refugees and immigrants as dangerous. We urge students, staff, and faculty to take a stand against these kind of statements when and where they encounter them.
