Reacting to an avalanche of complaints from the LFT, parents, school boards and others, the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education voted to stagger the implementation of Common Core standards, which will now not go into full effect until the 2025 school year. Previously, Common Core was slated to be fully operational by 2016.

Members Learn About NYSUT Benefits, Get APA Updates

 

At a General Membership Meeting on campus on November 25, APA members learned about the variety of benefits available to them through our statewide affiliate.  Laura Calhoun of NYSUT Member Benefits gave an overview of the many plans offered and provided literature and contact information.

Other agenda items included updates from President Kay Chester on negotiations, grievances, and member outreach, as well as the debut of our new website.  A basket of fair traded items was raffled, courtesy of member Maryanne Taverne.

“Today’s PISA results drive home what has become abundantly clear: While the intentions may have been good, a decade of top-down, test-based schooling created by No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top—focused on hyper-testing students, sanctioning teachers and closing schools—has failed to improve the quality of American public education.
