AFT-MD Reps Testify on Charter School Legislation

Members of the AFT-Maryland legislative team testified in opposition to four charter school bills for which hearings were held March 13. The bills proposed making a study of ways to improve to charter schools, allowing charter schools to directly hire school personnel, establishing an independent charter school advisory council, and proposing that charter schools be allowed to certify their own principals.

"Effectiveness" factor added to salary schedule

The JPSB adopted a revised salary schedule March 5 for teachers, principals, and assistant principals. The new schedule meets the requirements of a law passed last year by the Legislature that requires school disricts to factor employees’ experience and “effectiveness” into their pay.

Lawmakers discuss school employees and the Jindal agenda

A panel of lawmakers agreed Saturday that the Jindal administration’s agenda hurts school employees and their families. Five members of the House of Representatives spoke at the Louisiana Federation of Teachers’ annual Paraprofessional and School Related Personnel Conference in Baton Rouge.
